Coe offers a comprehensive physical education program in which all students have an opportunity to enroll. Some of the choices available to you as a Coe student are a physical education curriculum which will prepare you for responsibilities in teaching, coaching, graduate education, athletic training, or specialized work outside the school environment an intramural and recreational program which is open to all students and provides a variety of opportunities to participate in lifetime sports and activities an internship program which allows you to work in a community setting while earning academic credit

Athletic training is an allied healthcare profession that deals with physically active individuals from the time of initial injury until their unrestricted return to athletics or activity. The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a medical expert who specializes in the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to facilitate a safe return to athletics or physical activity.

Graduates of the Physical Education program typically seek careers as professional teachers and coaches in elementary and secondary level education throughout the country. Others continue their edu cation to the graduate level and seek employment teaching and coaching at the college level. Still others pursue corporate or busi ness opportunities, either as entrepreneurs or employees in the health and fitness industry.

The Division of Health and Physical Education offers Master of Education programs in Health Education and Physical Education and a Doctor of Philosophy program in Physical Education. All programs emphasize developing highly qualified heallth and physical education professionals to function as administrators, instructors, researchers and academic educators in public and private sectors. Graduate students are expected to have the capability to apply health and physical education knowledge and research results in learning - teaching development, supervision, planning, and conducting and evaluating school health programs, including conducting research.

Our department not only teaches students the knowledge and skills necessary to be physical education teachers and sports specialists, but also helps them to be good citizens who practice appropriate physical activities in their everyday life. At present, our department has a wide variety of material and equipment for experimental and practical training of students.
The department programs are staffed by eleven dedicated faculty members, working creatively and continuously for many years in different academic subareas of physical education and sports. The department also offers graduate courses to cultivate high level advanced specialists who can contribute to furthering knowledge and skills in physical education and sports.

This is a Chesapeake Area Consortium of Higher Education program. Students will complete general education requirements at Chesapeake College, professional training at Anne Arundel Community College, and clinical internship in Chesapeake’s service area when possible. Distance Learning will be used where appropriate. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students in the College, all physical therapist assistant students must receive a minimum grade of “C” in each physical therapist assistant course. Students who receive a final grade below “C” in any PTA course and BIO 211 will not be able to progress in the program. Students should consult with the Allied Health Department Chair or the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director in planning an appropriate program.

Oregon’s state universities offering Bachelor of Arts and/or Bachelor of Science degrees in Physical Education, Human Movement Studies, or Exercise and Movement Science are Eastern Oregon University, Oregon State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon, and Western Oregon University. OSU offers a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science with options in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education, Pretherapy and Applied Exercise Science. SOU offers options in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine and Health Promotion/Fitness Management. WOU has teaching and non-teaching options. Those students planning to teach Physical Education will need to complete a year of post-baccalaureate work to meet teacher certification at all state system colleges except WOU. Refer to the section on Elementary and Secondary Education in this catalog.

Since its establishment as the Department of Physical Education at the College of Education in March 1972, this Faculty has simultaneously offered lectures and actual training with a scientific approach to boost the efficiency of elite sports, health sports, school sports, living sports and leisure sports derived from human movements, and has endeavored to give its students the ability to work as professional instructors in each area.
In addition, considering the characteristics of the local society, the Faculty today offers a Major in Sport Sciences and a Major in Leisure Sports to produce professional instructors and teachers who can have easy access to employment after graduation. The faculty investigate the bright cultural pattern of leisure activities and sports at national level.

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Charleston Southern University is an undergraduate degree program within the Department of Kinesiology. The CSU ATEP maintains national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Each student accepted into the ATEP will be eligible to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and an optional minor in a desired subject and/or a double major.
The course work of one hundred and twenty-five (125-cr. hrs.) total credit hours consists of seventy-one (71) credit hours specialized in athletic training. A minimum of six (6) semesters is necessary to complete the didactic course work. In a set progression, students study athletic injury management, evaluation, prevention, emergency care, rehabilitation, organization/administration, general medical conditions, and professional development. Additionally, one thousand, eighty (1080) clock-hours of clinical education are fulfilled at the university, local high schools, hospitals, physician’s offices, professional teams and related allied health facilities over the course of six (6) semesters. The program exposes students to a variety of clinical education settings while providing for an increased level of responsibility as a student progresses, to ensure skill development and proficiency consistent with that of an entry-level, certified athletic trainer upon graduation from the ATEP.
