The mission of the Department is to create such a society through innovative and collaborative personnel preparation, research and scholarly activity, and advocacy.

The goal of the Department of Special Education is to provide University students with information and skills in working with persons with disabilities.The Department of Special Education provides Baccalaureate and Post Baccalaureate degrees in Special Education that prepares educators to become eligible for licensure in Special Education.

The Department of Special Education offers undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, Masters and PhD programs for individuals pursuing licensure to teach students with disabilities and for those not pursuing teacher licensure.

Licensure programs are available in conjunction with Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees and a post-baccalaureate certificate program. Program options include mild/moderate disabilities and severe disabilities/autism, and preschool through secondary grade levels.

In addition, the department offers Masters and Doctorate Degrees for those who wish to work as professionals in human service areas that serve individuals with disabilities or those want to take a leadership position within the field of Special Education.

The Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Foundations is offered as a regular semester program and as a summer semester program with online instruction during the rest of the year. The Department also offers a PhD degree with a focus in educational foundations and, in partnership with Educational Administration, a PhD in educational policy studies.
