Those pursing a Bachelor, Post Baccalaureate, or Masters degree in the Institute for Teacher Education program are usually hired as Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, or High School teachers within Hawai`i’s Department of Education. Program completion leads to certification to teach within the state of Hawai’i.
The Institute for Teacher Education (ITE) offers undergraduate degrees in elementary and secondary education (BEd), a post-baccalaureate certificate in secondary education (PBCSE) and advanced degrees in teaching (MEdT). All programs focus on the educational needs of children and adolescents, teaching, learning and curriculum. The students at UH Mānoa are ethnically diverse as are the students in Hawai‘i’s school system. Students in ITE programs, therefore, learn and teach in a unique multicultural environment.
A career in Special Education is very rewarding. Careers for graduates from the Special Education department include teachers within general or special education settings, early intervention educators, adult service/workforce providers, and careers with organizations serving individuals with disabilities, such as Special Olympics organizers. The goal of the Department of Special Education is to provide University students with information and skills in working with persons with disabilities.The Department of Special Education provides Baccalaureate and Post Baccalaureate degrees in Special Education that prepares educators to become eligible for licensure in Special Education.
The Department of Special Education offers undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, Masters and PhD programs for individuals pursuing licensure to teach students with disabilities and for those not pursuing teacher licensure.
Licensure programs are available in conjunction with Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees and a post-baccalaureate certificate program. Program options include mild/moderate disabilities and severe disabilities/autism, and preschool through secondary grade levels.
In addition, the department offers Masters and Doctorate Degrees for those who wish to work as professionals in human service areas that serve individuals with disabilities or those want to take a leadership position within the field of Special Education.

Educational Technology graduates are found in many learning environments including K-12 and higher education, government, business, industry, and health occupations. Many K-12 educators take Educational Technology courses for professional development purposes. However, those who complete the Masters programs within Educational Technology are often hired as Technology Coordinators, Technology trainers, and Instructional Designers. Those in the Doctoral program in Educational Technology are usually within leadership positions and are completing the program either for professional development or are planning to enter into higher education.

The Educational Technology department offers both Masters and Doctorates in Education, as well as certificate programs for educators. People pursuing certificates and degrees from Educational Technology come from a variety of backgrounds including K-12 and higher education, government, business, industry, and health occupations.

Professors: Depending on areas of expertise, graduates could be hired in a variety of university departments such as Educational Psychology, Second Language Studies, Curriculum Studies, Teacher Education, Nursing, Disability Studies, Educational Technology, Computer Science & Information, and Business.
Researchers or Specialists: Graduates could be hired as researchers or specialists in departments of education, K-12 schools, or research institutes.
Administrators: Previous graduates have also worked in administration at universities, K-12 schools, testing companies, testing & evaluation sections in departments of education, and directors of research institutes.
Teachers: Graduates who are teachers in K-12 schools have been appointed to leadership roles in areas of assessment & learning.

The Department of Educational Psychology (EDEP) promotes inquiry in human learning and development within the context of a diverse society.
Specifically, the major areas of study include human learning, human development, research methodology, statistics, measurement, and assessment & evaluation. Both Masters degree and Doctorate degree programs are offered in this department.
The mission of the department is to prepare educational professionals for leadership roles in schools and colleges, departments of education, and other educational settings. Teachers who receive the department’s MEd are prepared to become leaders in their schools and districts. Graduates with the PhD possess the knowledge for professional leadership in the field of education and the capacity to deal with those aspects and problems in society that need to be taken into account in advancing educational thought and policy development and practice.

Educators seeking professional development opportunities who are interested in the history of education, philosophy of education, international and comparative education, and the social and cultural foundations of education should consider a degree in Educational Foundations.
Studies in Educational Foundations focus on important educational policies and issues, using both disciplinary and interdisciplinary applications. Related areas of study include educational policy studies, educational law, multicultural education, peace education and the politics of education.Our department vision affirms multiple perspectives, multiple voices and collaboration in a program that is committed to engaging and deepening the prospect of democratic education.
The Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Foundations is offered as a regular semester program and as a summer semester program with online instruction during the rest of the year. The Department also offers a PhD degree with a focus in educational foundations and, in partnership with Educational Administration, a PhD in educational policy studies.
