Urban Education Policy from Brown University

The Department of Education offers a twelve-month program to prepare students for a variety of professional careers and/or advanced study involving policy analysis, planning, and development in urban public education. The program integrates research, theory, and practice to provide students with foundational concepts and core skills in such areas as data analysis and data-based decision making, economic theory and its application in the realm of urban education policy analysis, urban politics and education, human development in an urban education context, and urban demographics. The academic coursework is grounded in practice and is complemented by a concurrent nine-month internship in a local urban education policy setting. The program draws heavily on the urban education policy expertise of the Brown-based Annenberg Institute for School Reform. Collaborations with the Education Alliance, the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Public Policy and American Institutions, and other academic departments at Brown augment the practical and interdisciplinary aspects of the program.

Teacher Education from Brown University

Brown’s Master of Arts in Teaching program is a one-year program that prepares future educators to understand fundamental principles of teaching and learning and to apply that understanding to work effectively with children, families, and communities. Intentionally small in size, the program seeks to insure that future teachers learn best practices in curriculum design and instruction. Student teachers are encouraged to seek constructive feedback, take risks, engage with colleagues in exploring sensitive issues, and explore opportunities for personal and professional growth. The elementary and secondary M.A.T. programs are dedicated to the idea that teaching is creative and intellectually serious work. Those who are introduced to the craft of teaching at Brown are immersed in a community of education scholars and practitioners engaged in national and local efforts to improve education and the teaching profession. That community includes education department faculty and staff, the Education Alliance, and the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.
