Among people with disabilities, many of their conditions are considerably severe and profound. Some suffer from a severe disability while others endure more than one impairment. Early intervention and continuing special education support are particularly needed for people with severe disabilities, and special education teachers and professionals are thereby deeply relied upon. Nevertheless, the specialists in this particular field are relatively short in Taiwan . As the fact, our graduate institute is the very first master’s program specialized in severe disabilities in the country. It aims at cultivating educators and practitioners in the field and providing in-service training program for special education teachers and professionals, in hope to integrate the theories and practical experiences to develop a more effective care system for people with severe disabilities.

II. Program goals
The goals of this graduate program are to
1• prepare students to be educational researchers in s severe & profound disabilities.
2• prepare students to be professional practitioners in severe & profound disabilities.
3• prepare students to be high-level administrators in severe & profound disabilities.

III. Courses
Students in this graduate program are required to successfully complete 32-credit coursework and a thesis. The courses are categorized into three groups:
1 • Fundamental courses: These courses provide students with the basic understanding of severe disabilities.
2• Methodological courses: “Educational Research” and “Advanced Statistics in Education” are required. Other research courses will be taken depending upon the thesis topics of the students.
3 • Electives: Students can select courses according to their interest areas and topics.
A. The courses are provided based on the current state of special education, focusing on learning about individuals who are severe disabled and their developments.
B. The courses are the continuation of the undergraduate program, in hope to provide an in-depth learning on this professional field.
C. The program is consist of 13 PhD faculty members who are specialized in various areas, including mental retardation, hearing impairment, visual impairment, learning disabilities, multiple or server disabilities, rehabilitation counseling, speech and language pathology, and emotional disorders.
