The Education Department offers students the opportunity to explore the political, historical, social, and psychological dimensions involved in contemporary education. Although the department does not offer a major or minor, many students have been able to design multidisciplinary majors and minors (through the Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies) in which Education courses have played a key role. Given the Mission Statement of the College, we particularly wish to focus our students’ understanding on the plight and potential of America’s urban schools. Courses, faculty research, and student internship and teaching opportunities reflect this special focus.
The department also offers the Teacher Education Program (TEP), a series of courses that enables students from selected majors to become licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to teach in public middle or high schools. We maintain an active relationship with Burncoat Middle and High Schools to support the TEP, and also sponsor students in semester-away and other experiences to complement the TEP.

Degree of Elementary Education at Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School Of Theology
The Elementary Education program offers an integrated course of study that leads to a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Elementary Education. Extending the Holy Cross tradition of developing teachers, the Teacher Education Program (TEP) prepares students in their vocation as teachers by offering secondary and middle school certification. Focusing on the study and practice of urban teaching, the program allows certain majors to learn to teach at the high and middle school level.
The curriculum includes not only course work in the academic field where students will seek a license, but also specially designed education courses that address knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a competent teacher.
Academic instruction is carefully integrated with field-based experience, including a semester of full-time intern teaching.
Admission Requirements
In addition to completing an application to be accepted into Hellenic College, all students interested in the Elementary Education Program must complete a supplemental application form. If accepted, they can transfer 6 credits into the program. Those credits must have been acquired by taking education courses that are comparable to the education courses offered at Hellenic College. No courses will be waived without the approval of the Director of the program. All full-time student teaching experiences must take place in-state unless there are extenuating circumstances, which will be reviewed by the Director of the program.
