The Inquiry Methodology Program at Indiana University is dedicated to the advancement of social and behavioral research by critically evaluating, improving, and developing methodological theory and methods so that phenomena of interest can be more soundly investigated and better understood.
The Inquiry Methodology faculty consists of quantitative and qualitative methodologists, making the Indiana University program unique with regard to the types of methodological approaches addressed in the program and the educational opportunities it provides students. Students can choose to focus on a quantitative, qualitative, or an integrated program of study. The program is designed to be flexible enough to handle a wide variety of student interests (e.g., statistical modeling, psychometrics, methodological theory, evaluation, ethnography, philosophy of social science, hermeneutic-reconstructive analysis, discourse and narrative analysis, critical ethnography, and feminist research), but rigorous so as to ensure that its graduates can meaningfully contribute to the study of social and behavioral research.
The Inquiry Methodology Program seeks to fill the important and sometimes large gap between theoreticians and substantive researchers. The theoretical and substantive aspects of inquiry are purposefully put into dialogue so that the complex ways in which theory and practice interact are not taken for granted, but are themselves examined. For example, without theories to guide research, an area of inquiry may wander and lose sight of its goals. This mutual accountability is one of the many ways the bridge between theory and practice is being explored and developed in the Inquiry Methodology Program at Indiana University. The faculty and students in the Inquiry Methodology Program are dedicated to ensuring that meaningful research approaches are used to answer the complex questions that arise in social and behavioral research.

The master's program is available at Bloomington and at Indianapolis. Students may choose either a school track, leading to a standard school counselor license in the State of Indiana, or a community track (Bloomington only). The M.S. program in counseling is accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Students who wish to become a licensed mental health counselor, see the Ed.S. program section above.
This Master's program is available only on the Bloomington campus. The courses in this specialization provide students with the opportunity to inquire into the relation of education to the economic, social, political, and cultural developments that shape national and regional systems of schooling. The program also makes available opportunities for international travel and study as well as research and practicum experiences within the state and nation.
Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of coursework, including a 9-hour basic core, 9 hours of specialized studies in educational foundations, 9 hours of concentration pertinent to the students' specific interests

Mathematics Education at Indiana University is a program area within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. At the masters level, we offer a Master of Science in Secondary Education with an emphasis on mathematics. Although there is no official mathematics education track for students in the Master of Science in Elementary Education program, students in that program may orient their coursework toward mathematics with the help of a mathematics education advisor.

The master's program in secondary education is available at both Bloomington and Indianapolis. It prepares students for positions in middle schools, junior high schools, and high schools as professional classroom teachers, supervising teachers, or department chairpersons. To be prepared for any of these positions, the student must be eligible to hold an Indiana secondary school teaching license.
In addition to meeting the standard School of Education admission requirements, students interested in pursuing a master's degree in secondary education must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be admitted if they show evidence
