PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Graduate Certificate in Reading Education provides teachers with research-based strategies for teaching reading.
CURRICULUM
Although there are no course prerequisites, candidates who have had no previous children’s or adolescent literature courses are strongly encouraged to take one course prior to enrolling in the certificate program or at least prior to enrolling in RED 6846 Reading Practicum.
Total Hours Required—18 Credit Hours Minimum
Suggested courses for those candidates who have not had previous children’s or adolescent literature courses include: LAE 5415 Children’s Literature in Elementary Education (3 credit hours) or LAE 5465 Literature for Adolescents (3 credit hours).

Admissions
Admission is open to those with a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. An application to the graduate certificate program and official transcripts must be submitted. Applicants must apply online. All requested materials must be submitted by the established deadline(s).
Professionals currently certified as Florida teachers are eligible to pursue the Graduate Certificate in Reading Education.

The Master Reading Teacher is an individual who holds a Master Reading Teacher Certificate (MRTC) and whose primary duties are to teach reading and to serve as a reading mentor to other teachers.
ME.READ - Reading Specialist
This program will help you acquire the knowledge and develop the skills to contribute to the solutions of complex problems and to understand issues which are central to Texas' reading initiative. Graduates of our Reading Education program boast an all time 98 percent pass rate on the ExCET exam for the Reading Specialist Certificate.
Approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the Reading Certificate is for educators who assess student reading and provide reading instruction in response to those assessments. Reading Certificate holders are also authorized to develop, implement, and adapt the reading content curriculum and assist classroom teachers in these areas. Students may complete the Reading Certificate without earning the master’s degree.
The Certificate in Educational Leadership is designed for students who have a master’s degree in a subject or field of education other than educational administration and/or leadership. The coursework constitutes the modified Florida program in educational leadership at Florida International University and addresses the competencies assessed in the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE). The program is fully approved by the Florida Department of Education and may be used to satisfy part of the requirements for state certification in educational leadership.

The focus of the Reading Program at the University of Central Oklahoma is to train Reading Specialists to function in the areas of early childhood, elementary, secondary and adult education. The program is currently operating in the department of Special Services, in the College of Education. Graduates from the program will have competencies in literacy, reading diagnostics and remedial techniques at all four levels, and will be able to serve in both clinical and classroom settings.
