Teacher Education Degree at Mennonite College of Nursing Illinois

In the Teacher Education program, art education majors experience a breadth and depth of theory and practice. They acquire a sound knowledge and idea base and also develop skills and resources for teaching.

The undergraduate Art Education program is designed to prepare students to meet the challenges of teaching in the public schools. In order to teach art, one must understand creative processes and have a working knowledge of art as well as the skills and understandings of a teacher. Within this context, creative thinking as well as organizational and communication skills are promoted as necessities for success in all careers. In the program, students learn about children and their developmental patterns, teaching methodologies in art, classroom procedures, visual arts media, and current trends in Art Education. Students learn to apply knowledge of Art History, aesthetic awareness, and analysis to experiences appropriate for children of all ages.

Quality student teaching assignments are made at two different grade levels in schools across the state. Successful candidates are able to be certified to teach art in Illinois public schools grades K-12. ISU graduates teach art in public and private schools throughout the state and in many locations outside Illinois.

BS in Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Art Education is a professional degree program leading to certification to teach K–12 art in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The program reflects contemporary theory and practice in art studio, art history, criticism, aesthetics, culture, and pedagogy. The program complies with all Pennsylvania standards needed for certification to teach art in the commonwealth.

Art Education K12 Bachelor of Science at Plymouth State University

This program is certified at both the state and national level by the New Hampshire Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Graduates who complete this teacher certification program are eligible for K-12 teacher certification in the state of New Hampshire. Because of New Hampshire’s membership in the Interstate Certification Contract, Plymouth graduates are eligible to earn a certificate or license in another Contract state upon application to that state’s department of education. The Art Education program endorses the Plymouth State University conceptual framework for teacher education: CHECK. The experiences required for this program are Commitment and Holism and are based on Experience, Collaboration and Knowledge of the disciplines of the Fine Arts.

Art Education majors are required to complete a 50-hour observation component and a 10-hour service learning component prior to student teaching. As part of this requirement, students will have the opportunity to work with an experienced public school art educator through the New Hampshire Art Education Mentor Network. Students may also participate in the After School Arts Program for area children or participate in Arts Smarts, an interdisciplinary outreach program involving the Art Department Karl Drerup Gallery and Exhibitions Program.

All Art Education majors take a common 85-87 credit core, which includes 8-10 credits of advanced level course work in one of seven art disciplines: Art History, Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking or Sculpture. This opportunity provides a greater depth of experience in a single discipline. A portfolio is required for admission and transfer to the Department of Art. Portfolio guidelines are available on the Department of Art Web site or by contacting the Department Chair.

Art Education majors are expected to apply for admission to Teacher Certification Candidacy at the beginning of their second year in the program. This application is initiated through the Office of Teacher Certification. Refer to the section of the Catalog on Teacher Education and Clinical Experiences for additional information. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 is required for admission into this teacher education candidacy program; students are required to have a 2.70 GPA to enter student teaching.

Art Design Art History Art Education at Towson University

The Department of Art + Design, Art History, Art Education offers the Bachelor of Science in art, Bachelor of Science in art education, the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Art in art history, the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in art (studio), Master of Education (M.Ed.) in art education, and a graduate certificate in interactive media design. The B.A. is available in the art and art education majors and mirrors the B.S. degree requirements, but includes the foreign language requirement through the intermediate level (202 or equivalent).The art studio major offers 10 tracks: ceramics, digital art and design, graphic design, illustration, interdisciplinary crafts, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. BA in Art Education at Michigan State University

Art Education majors completing the BFA in the Department of Art and Art History at Michigan State University must satisfy three sets of requirements for graduation. The requirements are for the University, the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Art and Art History.

Art education occupies the overlap between visual expression and social responsibility. Art education is recognized as an integrated, compound discipline, requiring intensive training in studio art and art history while reaching beyond art and education for its resources. The social and cognitive sciences provide frameworks through which contemporary issues in visual culture and the transmission of cultural knowledge are explored. All coursework has an accompanying practicum, designed to provide pre-service teachers with the means to examine and apply their knowledge in a field setting. As a result of this learning-through-practice approach, all stakeholders benefit, including the pre-service teacher, the profession, the school district and future generations of young students.

Our program is distinguished by our concentration on practical applications — hands-on experience working with children and youth — throughout the course of study. Our Saturday Morning Art classes, taught by art education pre-service teachers, have brought opportunities for creative expression to nearly 300 community youngsters each semester for over 20 years. Additional outreach opportunities are provided through collaboration with various non-profit organizations in mid-Michigan.

B.A. in Art Education at University Of Maine

Program Description
The Department of Art offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. Art Education today includes research, the study of educational theory, the development of studio skills and practice in teaching. A combination of study in studio, art history, aesthetics and art criticism helps Art Education majors develop a comprehensive understanding of how art knowledge is organized and conveyed. In addition, students research and study the foundation of Art Education and gain practical experience in the teaching process.
In addition to the BA degree in Art Education, students majoring in Art Education graduate with minors in studio art and art history.
The Department of Art also offers the option for a developmental disabilities concentration which provides students an opportunity to understand the unique factors affecting the teaching of individuals experiencing disability.
Career Opportunities
The Bachelor of Arts in Art Education leads to certification as an art teaching specialist in the state of Maine, grades K-12. Students choosing the developmental disabilities concentration may be preparing to work with mainstreamed students in public schools or to go on for graduate study.

The Department of Art offers a number of scholarships to qualified first-time undergraduate students, who would like to study art at the University of Maine. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and the evidence of talent or accomplishment in the study of Studio Art, Art Education, or Art History. Graduate Study
Study in Art Education prepares a student not only for teaching, but also for graduate level studies. The Department of Art cooperates with the Graduate School and the College of Education and Human Development to offer individualized master’s and doctoral level programs which specialize in art education and related fields. Some Art Education graduates go on to graduate level study in museum education, art therapy, community arts education, arts administration or other fields which involve working closely with people in art.

Master of Art Education at Belmont University

The Art Education Option is designed to prepare students to teach art at the K-12 levels. With advisors in both the Department of Education and Department of Art, students are guided through the proper sequence of courses required for student teaching and licensure.

Students are required to take courses in 2D and 3D design, Drawing and Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Clay, Sculpture, Figure Drawing, and Art History.

In addition to coursework in studio areas and in the general education core, Art Education majors also complete 31 credit hours in Professional Education requirements including Art Education courses that prepare students for career options in both K-12 schools and in community art settings. As seniors, students will install an exhibition of their work in the Student Gallery and complete a semester of student teaching in two area schools.

Major Art Education at Saint Xavier University

Art Educators in the Saint Xavier University Secondary Education program are taught to provide active and imaginative learning strategies for the visual education of students. Through an interdisciplinary Art, Design and Art History program, future artists/teachers acquire a thorough knowledge of visual art and design concepts, as well as techniques and experiences to bring to their prospective roles as visual art/design educators.

In addition to the nine required Art & Design Department core classes, a combination of Studio Art and Design classes are recommended for Art Education majors, which examine a variety of media and skills. Art educators must also present individual creative work in Senior Seminar. A computer graphics course is recommended, as well as at least one mixed-media course, like Book as Art and Design, Collage & Assemblage, Design History and Inspiration or Interdisciplinary Installation, to bring the total hours in the major to 45 semester hours.

Certification requirements for Secondary Education instruction in Illinois are met by successful completion of Education courses taken in the Education minor of this program (27 s.h.), and passing grades in the Basic Skills Test and the Fine Arts Illinois Certification Test. Student teachers generally allot a separate semester for their six semester hours of directed teaching experience in a local school. Students wishing to be certified to teach art in high school must apply to the School of Education for admission.

Overview of the program

Art Education majors, just like Visual Arts majors, focus on a particular media that we call “specialty area”. Specialty areas include: painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, digital design, ceramics, printmaking and photography (students must select one and take a four course sequence to graduate with the degree). In addition, students must have a 2.5 GPA to enroll in courses in the College of Education and Human Development. Strengths of the program

This program offers individualized attention due to its size. Students often work one-on-one with their advisor, the program Director, throughout the entire process. Students may take their degree and certification anywhere in the United States to teach art.

Preparing for a job in the program

Students are encouraged to consider gaining a “Add-On Certification” in a secondary content area (i.e. English, Social Studies, History, etc.) that interests them, in order to be certified to teach that area in the high school. Students must either pass the Praxis in that content area or take 30 hours in the add-on content area.

Starting Salaries after completing the program (estimates only)

A National Federation of Teacher’s Survey done in 2001 found that the national average for a first year teacher is $27,900. Obviously geographic regions have variations as do Louisiana parishes.

Campus organizations and activities affiliated with the program

The Visual Arts Society(VAS) is a student group of art students that is available departmentally. Students are also encouraged to join the National Art Education Association (www.naea-reston.org) as students. Students are also encouraged to join the State Chapter of NAEA where they desire to teach (they are automatically admitted to Louisiana Art Education Association (www.laea.net) once they join NAEA).

Related fields that might interest you

Management in education is often called “Supervision” or “Administration.” Students may eventually move into Arts Curriculum Supervision with an additional degree (an MA in Art Education). If students wish to teach Talented Art in Louisiana, they are strongly encouraged to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) an area of Fine Arts (i.e., painting or drawing). If students want to teach Art Education at the college level, they will need a MA and a Ph.D. (Doctorate) in Art Education with a minimum of three years teaching at the K-12 level.
