The basic tenet of bilingual education is to help children learn English at the same time they are developing a sound foundation in basic subjects. There is a demand for bilingual teachers nationwide, as well as here in southern Idaho.

This program is designed for any student who wishes to reach culturally and linguistically different children. Students who have a knowledge of Spanish and are interested in teaching are strongly encouraged to consider this program. However, students who do not speak Spanish will find ample opportunity to acquire proficiency in Spanish prior to the completion of their degree.

The Department of Special Education, Early Childhood and Bilingual Education fulfills the mission and vision of the university and the goals of the College of Education by preparing educational personnel to (1) to serve in educational organizations and related public and private agencies and institutions; (2) to engage in research and development activities; and (3) to provide service to the community, university and professional groups. Its primary purpose is to provide initial and advanced teacher and school personnel programs. The Special Education, Early Childhood and Bilingual Education programs are designed to reflect the College’s philosophy of preparing teachers and other educational personnel who are knowledgeable and competent practitioners; dedicated to serving the educational needs of students of widely varying abilities and backgrounds; and responsive participants in the quest for the improvement of the nation’s schools and the teaching profession.

The Bilingual/Multicultural Education Department (BMED) prepares K-12 teacher candidates and practitioners to work with students to develop a democratic and pluralistic society. The Department faculty explores theoretical and pedagogical issues of bilingualism, multiculturalism, and educational equity and social justice, offering courses and experiences to assist credential candidates and professionals to work successfully in classrooms, schools, and educational agencies within our diverse state. The Department curriculum develops students’ pedagogical, analytical, and planning skills in order to prepare them to operate effectively in the development, implementation, and analysis of educational policies and programs affecting the academic lives of low income, and culturally and linguistically diverse K-12 students.
