Teaching Credentials, Multicultural Education
The Department of Educational Studies serves students who wish to pursue their teaching credential or an advanced degree in curriculum and instruction. In addition, the department houses an English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement program.
The curriculum for the teaching credential brings together courses offered in the academic areas of educational foundations (which usually includes content in educational history, sociology, and policy); teaching and learning; tests and measurements; multicultural education; and educational psychology (including developmental psychology). These interdisciplinary courses are field-based, with students spending time in classroom, school, and community settings.
Courses offered by the department are linked with the state of Wyoming’s Professional Education Standards. Faculty members also engage students on issues of health/wellness, leadership, literacy, multiculturalism/diversity, special education, and technology. Alternative forms of authentic assessment are a key aspect of departmental courses.
For individuals seeking an advanced degree, Education Studies collaborates with Elementary/Early Childhood Education and Secondary Education to offer an M.A. in education (including a program with a teaching and learning emphasis) as well as both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.
It is a challenging yet exciting time for educators at all levels. The need for highly qualified teachers in early childhood and elementary classrooms is tremendous. The Elementary/Early Childhood Education Department, in collaboration with multiple departments in Education and Arts & Sciences, provides high quality, NCATE accredited programs for students leading to K-6 teaching certification, teaching endorsements, and graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction.
If you have questions which are not addressed as you move through the site, please contact us directly.
Faculty and staff in the department are responsible for delivery of teacher certification programs for those individuals desiring to teach students in grades 7-12 and for the delivery of graduate programs in conjunction with the Departments of Elementary and Early Childhood Education and Educational Studies.
We are very proud of our teacher education programs and of the graduates we provide to fill the classrooms in the public schools of Wyoming, the Rocky Mountain region as well as schools across the country.
