REACH to Teach Degree at St. Joseph College Connecticut

REACH to Teach is a graduate program at Saint Joseph College that combines initial secondary teacher licensure with a Master of Arts Degree in one streamlined, cohort program. In just five semesters, from spring to spring, REACH candidates complete their certification requirements and earn a professional license to teach in Connecticut’s public schools. With just one additional semester, students can complete their Master’s degree. To create the most competitive program for the strongest teacher candidates, the REACH program provides students with a scholarship that waives graduate tuition for nine credits of student teaching, making it financially competitive with any program.

Saint Joseph College graduates are consistently recognized among Connecticut’s top teachers and instructional leaders. With significant shortages already present in the secondary schools, it is an opportune time to become an exceptional secondary teacher.

Who should apply to REACH?
Students are eligible to apply if they hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, earned a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA and as well as in the major, and have passing scores on the PRAXIS I test or hold a PRAXIS waiver letter. During a meeting with Certification Officer Jill Mack, REACH applicants will be able to review the REACH program and receive detailed information on materials required for acceptance in the Department of Education.

How do I apply to REACH to Teach
Please call the Certification Office, 860.231.5330, to schedule an appointment to discuss the REACH to Teach Program. Before your appointment, please send an official copy of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts as well as your PRAXIS I Score Report or PRAXIS I waiver letter to: Certification Officer, Department of Education, Saint Joseph College, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117.

What makes REACH special?
REACH prepares prospective high school teachers for today’s inclusive secondary classroom with students of diverse needs and cultures in an accelerated cohort program. Saint Joseph College rewards such highly motivated, aspiring teachers with a scholarship award for nine credits in student teaching.

Eligible candidates who sign a REACH to Teach program agreement will be accepted into the program in limited-size cohort groups that begin each January. Full financial aid is available for two years.

How is REACH different from traditional secondary licensure programs?
REACH Candidates:
Submit a singular application into The Graduate School and the Education Department.
Learn together in a cohort under the personalized attention of Saint Joseph College faculty.
Pre-register for summer and fall classes as a cohort.
Experience a comprehensive, specialized, yet accelerated program.
Meet with an academic advisor who has expertise with the REACH program.
Receive a scholarship for 9 credits of student teaching.
Network with prior REACH graduates.
Receive both secondary teacher licensure and a Master of Arts degree in one accelerated program.

What is the process for acceptance into REACH to Teach?
You will complete the process for admission to the Department of Education after meeting with the Certification Officer who will provide you with all necessary information. The REACH to Teach faculty will evaluate your application and notify you of your acceptance to REACH at the same time as your admission to the Department of Education. You will sign and return a REACH to Teach agreement with a $150 non-refundable check payable to Saint Joseph College that will be applied to your first course in the cohort.

What happens if I am not able to continue in the cohort?

You may transfer all your completed courses to the traditional program with no loss of course credits. You will complete a new planned program of study for licensure as well as a new plan of study for the MA. An additional 3-credit course for the MA is required. The scholarship for student teaching credits does not apply to the traditional program.

Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification at St. Lawrence University New York

For St. Lawrence University undergraduates who do not complete the certification minor in education, the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program offers an alternative route to initial teaching certification. In this graduate program, St. Lawrence University students who complete the prerequisite courses for student teaching as part of the educational studies minor as undergraduates, and who receive a grade of 2.5 or higher in each course, may then apply for the Professional Semesterr (student teaching) during any appropriate semester following graduation with a bachelor’s degree. Students who undertake this option must apply to the education department both for admission to the graduate school and also to the Professional Semester. Their applications for student teaching will be reviewed by the Teacher Education Advisory Committee using the same criteria listed above. Students in the program take the four courses of the Professional Semester as graduate level courses and pay graduate tuition. Three of the four courses will count toward the master’s degree in General Studies in Education at St. Lawrence University.

The Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program is also open to St. Lawrence University students (and graduates of other accredited colleges) who did not complete the prerequisite courses prior to graduation. In those cases, students must complete graduate courses in education that are equivalent prerequisites to student teaching, so the program will take longer than one semester. In addition, they must satisfy the University’s requirements for subject matter competency in the teaching field. Information about application procedures and details regarding the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program are included in the University’s Graduate Studies Catalog, available from the Department of Education or on this Web site.

Five Year Bachelors Masters in Secondary Education at Mercyhurst College

The Five Year Bachelors + Masters Degree Program in Secondary Education

Be part of an innovative new program
Mercyhurst students who wish to prepare for a career in secondary education can now earn both a Bachelors degree in a “subject area” as well as a Masters of Science degree in Secondary Education in a total of five years!

Students complete their undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, math, English or social studies, and then enroll directly in the graduate Secondary Education program. At the end of the graduate program, the student earns a Masters of Science degree and meets the requirements for secondary teacher certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Get the skills you need for success
The urban-based graduate program focuses on the theory, research and practice of teaching - as both an art and a science. Courses include critical teaching strategies classroom management, assessment and instructional planning, and subject area teaching methods. All students complete both student teaching and a directed urban field experience.

Save valuable time and money
The Five Year Bachelors & Masters Degree Program in Secondary Education saves the student both time and money. Since the master’s degree in only one year instead of the usual two years, students save an entire year’s worth a tuition costs and can enter the job market a year sooner! Plus, students are charged the special Mercyhurst Alumni tuition rate for their fifth year - 20% less than the regular graduate tuition at Mercyhurst.

How it works
You will meet with an advisor from the Education Department during your junior year, and will typically make a formal application to the graduate program early in the fall of your senior year. You will complete selected education classes as electives during your senior year and complete the PRAXIS teaching exams. You will then enroll in graduate courses starting in the summer following your senior year.

You may, of course, change your plans at any time during your undergraduate program. There is no obligation to pursue the graduate degree or teacher certification.
