Degrees for Education

Since the University of North Alabama was restructured as the south’s first coeducational state teacher’s college in 1872, UNA’s College of Education has had a long and storied tradition. The College of Education is nationally recognized and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Because of this accreditation, teacher education graduates are able to compete successfully for teaching positions in Alabama and in all other states.

Students majoring in teacher education must fulfill initial requirements for the teacher education program, in addition to normal University admission requirements. These include maintaining a minimum grade point average, passing the Content Mastery Examination for Educators and completing other mandated requirements.

Exciting non-certification programs are available in the Departments of Human Environmental Sciences and Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

There are a number of outstanding student organizations in the College of Education which provide additional opportunities for students to develop their skills.

Kilby Laboratory School, the only laboratory school directly affiliated with a university in the State of Alabama, and the Child Development Center are an integral part of the College of Education programs.

The Education Research and Inservice Center provides outstanding professional development opportunities for area educators.

The College of Education also offers a number of master’s degree programs in both certification and non-certification areas.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Grove City College actively trains teachers to promote educational excellence into the 21st century. The design of the teacher certification program provides a balance of:

Over the years Grove City College education majors have established a long tradition of excellence on state and national teacher examinations. Our education majors are averaging a 99 percent pass rate on the National Teacher Exam. This tradition of excellence continues to grow as Grove City strives to groom teachers who are on the cutting edge of what a well-prepared teacher ought to be.

In addition to on-campus classroom learning experiences, all teacher candidates are required to visit operating schools in which they participate in a variety of teaching-related functions as part of their methods, core courses and field experience requirements.

These programs provide excellent opportunities for students to obtain first-hand experience in the classroom prior to student
teaching.

Teacher preparation, child development, and educational leadership are the primary concerns of the School of Education.

The school also offers courses concerning historical, sociocultural, political, economic, and philosophical issues in education that are important for any well-educated citizen to understand.

Our programs offer many opportunities to apply knowledge of how children grow and learn; students are encouraged to work with children in the Children’s School (the Mills School of Education laboratory school) and at other schools off campus, or with children in hospitals and community agencies.

The combination of the study of education and applied experiences is useful for future careers in many fields, including medicine, law, politics, publishing, the arts, and social services, as well as careers more directly serving children and youth. The department advises on the interdisciplinary majors in child development and liberal studies.

The Early Childhood Education Program offers several program options for students interested in working with children, birth through eight and their families. In addition, the ECE Program operates a Laboratory School for toddlers (18 months to 3 years) and preschoolers (3-5 years). We have integrated our curriculum to meet the Early Childhood Special Education Blended Certificate standards for two-year programs. The Early Childhood Education field provides a wide variety of employment possibilities. Employment includes child care, preschool teaching, kindergarten and primary school teacher’s aide, Head Start family educator, special education aide, and kindergarten and grades one through three classroom teacher.
