Overview This course has been designed in partnership with local primary schools to meet the requirements for postgraduate teacher education. Of the 38 weeks total, 18 will be spent in school. This course will prepare you to teach across the primary age range and in all National Curriculum subjects. You will be equipped to meet the National Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) upon successful completion of the course. Before commencing, you will decide whether you wish to focus on teaching Early Years (pupils three to seven years old), or Early/Later Years (pupils five to eleven years old) within the PGCE programme. This course includes a General Professional element which covers the role of the professional teacher, the child as learner and wider issues associated with school and society. Child development, classroom organisation and management, assessment, recording and reporting and classroom relationships are some of the key areas of skills and understanding that you will develop. Mandatory subject modules prepare you to teach English, Mathematics and Science in Key Stages One and Two, and, especially in the case of Advanced Early Years students, in nursery and reception classes. Foundation subjects and Religious Education are also covered. There are ICT sessions, though all students are expected to develop their own skills in Information and Communication Technology, both for preparing coursework and for using ICT skills in school. School experience is a substantial and integral part of the course from the first term, through both serial and block practice, with further experience in Terms Two and Three. Throughout the course there is an emphasis on inclusive education, with particular reference to managing behaviour and special needs. When possible, students spend some time in special schools. You will have the opportunity to further your knowledge, understanding and skills in an area of primary education through extended study from a chosen option range of curriculum areas. Extended subjects offered include the National Curriculum subjects, French, ICT, RE, Special Educational Needs and Advanced Early Years. Candidates apply for the course selecting which of these they would like to develop as their Extended subjects, based on their qualifications and/or experience.

Overview
If you are currently working in an education or training environment this course will give you the opportunity to boost your Higher Education qualifications to Honours degree level before taking your next career step. It has been specifically designed for Top-up Foundation degrees in Education, or for students with professional teaching qualifications.
This programme will improve your professional practice through the concept of the professional learner. This is achieved by providing you with the theoretical underpinning and the appropriate analytical tools to critically examine your own work setting. The work is based on the premise that practical decisions must be objectively evaluated against recognised criteria.
Progression
You will take five subject modules including educational research leading to a dissertation on a topic of professional interest to you.
Although this degree does not give you qualified teacher status, it does give you the ideal foundation from which to apply for PGCE or Graduate Teacher programmes for school-based training.
Each annual cohort has a September start and the course is run as a two-year, part-time pathway.
Part 1 (60 credits) consists of four modules, including Research Skills. Part 2 consists of a Dissertation and one module of Research Methods (60 credits).

Through partnerships with Primary and Secondary schools, museums, galleries, community groups and artists from a broad spectrum of disciplines we offer trainees the opportunity to gain a PGCE in Secondary Art and Design with Qualified Teacher Status.
The partnerships in the programme
At Northumbria University we have a strong ethos of working with partners in the artistic community to give our trainee teachers a strong flavour of the opportunities available to support them during and beyond studying for a PGCE with us.
Secondary Schools
Our partner schools located throughout this large region are diverse, with enthusiastic and highly professional staff, who offer exciting and supportive environments to gain training experience.
Primary Schools
We enjoy partnerships with Primary Schools who have a particular strength in Art and Design education to enable trainees to place their chosen specialist age group in context.
Museums and Galleries
We run projects with the Shipley Art Gallery which holds the North East’s Contemporary Craft Collection. Trainees have the opportunity to develop their subject knowledge, work with community groups and develop relationships with arts organisations, artists, curators and museum educationalists. We have strong links with the new BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art with the resulting partnership being one which aims to push traditional boundaries, explore and experiment with ideas and new initiatives, use BALTIC’s resources and design new ways of integrating Contemporary Art in education. This innovative partnership creates a unique focus for trainees studying with Northumbria University.
University based programmes
The components offered through partnerships are complemented with lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials held at Coach Lane Campus and in some placement schools.
A programme of generic professional studies is offered by a range of highly professional and experienced lecturers, their aim being to develop trainees understanding of educational policy and procedures, teaching and learning theory and practice and planning, assessment and evaluation procedures. More subject specific approaches are explored through curriculum studies session. Through a highly successful timetable of workshops programmed in placement schools, trainees expand their subject knowledge and address any skills gaps that they may initially have.

Teaching is academically and professionally challenging and we expect hard work from you and, in return, offer much academic and personal support, including individual and small group tutorials.
The PGCE combines the theory and practice of education and we work in close partnership with schools in designing and delivering our programme. For 24 of the 36 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two secondary schools but with a short primary school experience at the beginning and another one near the end of the programme, to raise your awareness about progression from primary to secondary school.
As a student at King’s, you will have access to research seminars by leading academics, high quality study facilities as well as the excellent social and cultural opportunities of the capital. The programme is very intensive and most student teachers find that they are unable to do part-time work during their studies.
