Early Childhood Education

A degree in Early Childhood Education, prepares you to work with children from six weeks to eight years of age. Course work includes:
Children’s Play
The Child from Conception to Eight
Marriage and the Family
Teaching in Early Childhood
Early Childhood Curriculum Planning
Student Teaching

Emphasizing the role of the specialist in today’s educational system, the programs leading to certification in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education allow students to integrate particular academic disciplines with a comprehensive knowledge of appropriate teaching/learning strategies. Both of these programs are available to undergraduates as well as to individuals with baccalaureate degrees wishing to teach in the schools.

Students are eligible to apply for Instructional I Certificate issued by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, if they have successfully:
Completed the program leading to certification
Passed the required PRAXIS exams
AND demonstrated competence in student teaching.

The Secondary Education program is a collaborative effort among all the departments in the School of Arts and Sciences. As a Secondary Education major, you can integrate content courses in your chosen area with courses in education. After meeting the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Education and obtaining a teaching certificate, you’ll be prepared to teach children in secondary schools.

The program guide for secondary education is a cooperative effort between the Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering Technology, the Journalism and Mass Communication Department and the Humanities and Human Sciences Department. It is designed to integrate your academic programs with preparatory certification courses in education and emphasize your role as a specialist in the education system.

We invite you to stand up and go to the head of the class. Because when you earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Secondary Education - English, you’ll have fulfilled all the requirements for certification in Secondary Education, both in English and Mass Communication.

You can come away with all the essentials for teaching in a secondary school, plus a solid background in writing, literature and communications — and the opportunity to put it into practice during your student teaching experience.

With the growing demand for qualified secondary school teachers, there have been significant salary increases in both private and public schools. So after graduation, expect to find a position that fits your skills and interests.
