Degrees for Education

This program should form an excellent starting point for those who wish to pursue a career as a physiotherapist. The program benefits from the expertise of staff, many of whom are health care professionals and scientists, and also from the many social facilities including teaching hospitals. There is an overall emphasis on study skills and improving manual examination techniques used in subjects such as Examination and Therapeutic Methods, Rehabilitation, Manual Methods in Physiotherapy, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, or Reflex Massage.

In recent years, careers in physical education have become more specialized. Students interested in physical education or related fields find numerous career opportunities in teaching, coaching, management, marketing, finance, health promotion, rehabilitation, recreation and wellness/fitness. Most of these positions require a bachelor’s degree, and some require special certifications or advanced study. Teaching, coaching and administrative positions are available in schools and colleges. Agencies that provide preventative exercise programs include health clubs, corporate centers, commercial agencies, and community organizations such as recreation departments and YMCAs.

Rehabilitative exercise programs are usually conducted in health-related settings such as hospitals, clinics and sports medicine facilities. Wellness programs are growing in popularity. Exercise prescription, smoking cessation, stress management, healthy eating and weight control are popular program areas.

The minor in Education consists of 12 or more units in upper division education courses approved by a departmental advisor. It may be particularly useful to students with undergraduate majors or who intend graduate study in a Human Resource Area, e.g., Communications Studies, Criminal Justice, Counseling, Family and Consumer Science, Nursing, Recreation Administration, Social Welfare, Speech Pathology and Audiology, and Vocational Education.
