Since the University of North Alabama was restructured as the south’s first coeducational state teacher’s college in 1872, UNA’s College of Education has had a long and storied tradition. The College of Education is nationally recognized and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Because of this accreditation, teacher education graduates are able to compete successfully for teaching positions in Alabama and in all other states.
Students majoring in teacher education must fulfill initial requirements for the teacher education program, in addition to normal University admission requirements. These include maintaining a minimum grade point average, passing the Content Mastery Examination for Educators and completing other mandated requirements.
Exciting non-certification programs are available in the Departments of Human Environmental Sciences and Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
There are a number of outstanding student organizations in the College of Education which provide additional opportunities for students to develop their skills.
Kilby Laboratory School, the only laboratory school directly affiliated with a university in the State of Alabama, and the Child Development Center are an integral part of the College of Education programs.
The Education Research and Inservice Center provides outstanding professional development opportunities for area educators.
The College of Education also offers a number of master’s degree programs in both certification and non-certification areas.

The Wyoming Teacher Education Program (WTEP) is one of the premier teacher preparation programs in the United States. The National Education Association has selected UW as a model for teacher education programs across the country. It is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Secondary English teacher education at the University of Wyoming occurs in three phases.
Phase I begins in the sophomore year when students take EDST 2480, Diversity & the Politics of Schooling, and begin working in the public schools.
In Phase II, EDST 3000, Teacher as Decision Maker, students are introduced to unit and lesson plans. During this practicum experience they teach in a k-12 classroom. Students are admitted to the WTEP upon meeting requirements and enrolling in Phase II.
Phase III is a two-semester sequence. The Phase IIIA semester takes place in the fall and consists of pedagogy classes. Phase IIIB, the student teaching or residency semester, is completed in the spring semester. Application is made for Phase III in December of the year prior to actually enrolling.

The Department of Education Specialties offers bachelor’s degree programs leading to K-12 certification in a number of liberal arts and science disciplines. In Maryland, secondary certification covers middle school and high school, specifically grades 7-12.
Persons already holding an undergraduate degree who wish to teach in their subject area at the K-12 level, should apply to the MAT Program.
At the undergraduate level, students at SU may achieve teacher certification in the areas below. Students interested in teaching should consult the department chair about current teacher-shortage areas.
Please follow the links below to the check list for each K-12 program.
Physical Education
Music (vocal and instrumental)
ESOL
A student pursuing secondary certification must be admitted to the University and declare a major in the content area above with a track in education. K-12 education is not, in itself, a major. Once declared, a student is assigned two faculty advisors: one advisor from the major department and one advisor from the Department of Education Specialties.
Students pursuing K-12 certification may not complete coursework on a “credit count” basis. Education coursework may be completed only within a declared degree program.
Students wishing to pursue secondary/K-12 certification must do the following:
Have a declared major in the content area with a declared track in K-12 education
Pass the PRAXIS I Test by January of sophomore year or by the time 45 credits are completed
Physical Education majors must pass the PRAXIS I Test by the time 42 credits are completed
Fulfill Admission Requirements for the Professional Teacher Education Program (PTEP)
Submit an application to the PTEP. Physical Education majors submit the PHEC application. All other Secondary/K-12 students submit the appropriate application:
