> General Information
The Education Unit, in cooperation with other academic units, prepares students for teaching at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels. Entrance into the College does not guarantee admission to the Teacher Certification (TCCERT) Program. Students must make a separate application to the Teacher Certification Program. Prior to admission to the TCCERT program, undergraduates will be assigned an advisor who will assist in planning the sequence of certification courses. Students must have a certifiable major and minor and adhere to the certification requirements as listed below in order to obtain teacher certification.
After successfully completing the College’s degree requirements (including the certifiable major and certifiable minor course work for teacher certification), approved First Aid and CPR (Adult & Child) training, and passing the appropriate Michigan tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC), you will be eligible for recommendation by Marygrove to the State of Michigan for a Provisional Teaching Certificate. Two specific teaching disciplines are offered in the education unit: Early Childhood Education (minor) and Special Education (major). Specific departments in the College offer all other teaching majors and minors. For full descriptions of these programs, see their respective program sections in this catalog.
> Accreditation
Marygrove has the approval of the State of Michigan Department of Education for its certification programs. Students in early childhood education obtain the Early Childhood minor endorsement (ZA) while Special Education students earn the Learning Disabilities major endorsement (SM).

The teacher education program at St. Lawrence University provides sufficient academic preparation for initial certification in any other state that has a current reciprocity agreement with New York State for teacher preparation - currently more than 45 other states or U.S. territories. To be certified in any state, the student must apply directly to the education agency in charge of teaching certification in that state; if the student has already been certified in New York, the reciprocity agreements will hold for academic preparation, and the student must submit a copy of the New York certificate as a part of the application process. These reciprocity agreements do not include competency testing requirements, which each state may determine separately.
To meet standards for a Provisional Certification of Qualification (initial certificate) in a Canadian province, students must meet all requirements (including testing) for certification in New York State and be issued a New York State teaching certificate. Because certification standards in other states and provinces are changing, students should check with the Department of Education for details regarding specific certification requirements in any other state or province.

The special education major is a course of study that will prepare students to meet the educational needs of children and adolescents (K-12) with mild to severe disabilities. The curriculum incorporates the Performance-Based Standards for Colorado Teachers (2000), the Colorado Model Content Standards (1997), the Colorado Licensure Standards for the Special Education Generalist (2003), and the Council for Exceptional Children Ethics, Standards, and Guidelines for Special Educators (2003). All special education majors will take a General Studies program, which provides preparation to teach content within the context of both special education and general education. The education concentrations (elementary or secondary) provide teacher preparation for effective instruction within the context of an inclusionary program. Students should consult with a special education faculty advisor for information regarding an added endorsement for elementary education or secondary education.
